Harding defeated Ludlowe 25-0 as PAT BLOOMBERG scored three touchdowns and Joe Kozdeba also starred before 10,000 fans at Hedges Stadium. John Maceyunas and George Tarasovic halted drives by the Tigers with fumble recoveries. & FRANK WANZIE passed to Mickey Hudak and Boris Sheleg added the decisive PAT in Stratford's 7-6 win over Ludlowe. & Semi-pro action saw the Stratford Rockets blank the Naugatuck Rangers 20-0 highlighted by ED KRIZ'S TD reception from George Finlayson and George Hanna's plunge after a fumble recovery by Hal Lucas. & ED NELSON, Hank Meyers, Joe Takach and Ed Forte scored to lead the Black Rock Seniors over the Norwalk Top-Hatters 28-7. & Touchdowns by JACK RAMOS and Ray Finch paced the Black Rock Juniors over the Bronx AA 14-0. & The Rosebuds defeated the Vagabonds 11-2 to win the City Open baseball tournament as ANDY CAGGINELLO and Bill Powley combined for eight hits. Vic Zsalman, Bob Sherwood and Chet Kazmerzyk added two hits apiece and Gene O'Connell and Fred Reichert shared the pitching duties.

50 YEARS AGO

JEFF DONOHUE scored twice and Pete Sauer and Frank Robotti led a potent ground attack as Fairfield Prep shut out Stratford 19-0 in the successful coaching debut of JOE BROSLEY. Jim Stary, Bob Malstrom, Dan Coombs, Joe Sikorski and Bill Robinson were the defensive standouts. & Harding handed White Plains, N.Y., a 19-14 loss as HERB SUTTON scored on runs of 51 and 49 yards.

Captain Joe Lombardo, whose defense and blocking were outstanding, added the third TD on a short carry. & DICK DOWNEY scored twice, including a 31-yard pass from Pat Graham, as Milford shaded Norwalk 20-19. Ernie Crocco added an 11-yard run and Henry Brockenberry a pair of key PATs. Gerald Metuski and Ron Rogowski led the defensive effort. ... Warde lost to Greenwich 40-7 in its first varsity football game. BEN SLESINSKY scored on a QB sneak for the Eagles while Joe Renaud and Al Greco turned in commendable efforts. 40 YEARS AGO

SAM CAPPOLA threw three TD passes, including an 11-yarder to Bill Tinkler and a 20-yarder to Bill Strumke, as the Connecticut Rockets (3-2) beat the Meriden Shamrocks (3-1) 41-13 at Hedges Stadium. Nate Farley added an 83-yard interception return and Ron Zoia a 56-yard run. Tackle Bill Kelly and ends Larry O'Toole and George Kelly helped control the running of Tony Pontillo. & JOHN KNAPP threw 30 yards to Tom Pepe and Pete Goumas scored from the three in Ansonia's 12-8 win over Shelton. Carmine Perri had a 34-yard TD run for the Gaels. & Notre Dame scored 15 unanswered points to rally past Harding 22-8 as ERIC SINGH provided the big spark for rookie coach Bob DeVeau. QB Tome Heyse scored on two plunges and Paul Higgins on a two-yarder. Ron Monk had a four-yard TD run in defeat. & Bullard-Havens got by Bassick 18-14 as AL DINA scored on runs of 22 and 29 yards and Frank Autore from the one. Ed Wheeler, George Randolph, Ken Crouch and Jon Redmond were standouts on the line. John Godbolt (32, 57) caught TD passes from George Koulouris. & D.F. Wheeler pro JACK MCGOLDRICK posted a 54-hole total of one-over 214 at Brooklawn to win the Connecticut PGA championship by three shots over Wally Cichon and Bill Salvatore. 30 YEARS AGO

Fairfield Prep edged Harding 17-16 as coach EARL LAVERY earned his 100th career win on TD runs by Steve Salvati (13) and John DiTullio (9). Lonnie Drinks (85) and Michael Jordan (39) scored on the ground for the Presidents. & Bunnell handed Bassick a 39-6 loss as CHRIS PERRY scored four TDs while rushing 21 times for 90 yards. The Lions' points came on Eduardo Crespo's 10-yard run. & Newtown beat Masuk 20-0 as PETE MEIER, the Sunday Post Class 'A' Player of the Year as a junior, passed for 118 yards, including 38-yards to Chris Wertz for a TD, and ran 89 yards for another. Wertz also caught a seven-yarder from brother Mike. & Ansonia got the better of Shelton 21-12 as sophomore MIKE PARKS scored on a 14-yard carry and QB Howie Tinney on a pair of short runs. Mark Cramer got the Gaels on the board with a one-yard sneak and an 89-yard pass to Ray LaBonte. & Hamden bested Law 28-13 behind RICH DIANA'S 163-yard, four TD effort. Gary Shackett starred in defeat with 22 carries for 116 yards, including a six-yard TD while Paul Cassanova added a one-yarder. & AL DOUTHIT scored on runs of 37 and 29 yards and Kevin Oliver on a 30-yard pass from Rick Theriault to lift Foran past North Branford 22-7. 20 YEARS AGO

The 1-2 punch of TOM OKO (126, including a 72-yard TD run and a six-yard pass from Nick Verdicchio) and Tom Katz (86, five-yard TD run and two interceptions) led Shelton over Ansonia 21-15, snapping an 11-game losing streak against the Chargers before 2,500 at Finn Stadium. Mike Shortell scored on a six-yard pass from James Lane and Robert Robinson on a short carry in defeat. & Jeff Trzcinski connected on TD passes of 16 and 22 yards to DOUG LATULIPPE and Joe DeSabella added a four-yard run as Fairfield upset fifth-rated Wilton 18-6. Noseguard Jim Karageorge had a key fumble recovery. & Law handed Bunnell a 12-7 loss as DAVE COULOMBE scored on a 29-yard pass from Mike Shackett, Dan Comacho on a one-yard run and Bob Trowbridge recovered a fumble at the Law 13 to halt a late drive. Dave Bumbala answered from three yards out. & Coach Vin Lombardo's Weston team snapped a 17-game losing streak with a 27-7 win over Masuk as BRAD FOWLER was sensational with kickoff returns of 95 and 90 yards. Dan Kirschner added a 40-yard interception return and T. J. Mulvihill two field goals (33, 29). Tony Macaluso and Joey Simone starred on defense. & In Yankee Conference action UConn stunned visiting Richmond 29-22 before 10,742 as Westport native PETE LANE (21 of 36, 176 yards) threw TD passes to David Dunn (14), Ansonia's Glenn Antrum (17) and Scott Sweitzer (19). Fairfield Prep's Pat Anglim and Wilton's Stu Milberg played well on the offensive line. Harding's Dwayne Miller and Bethel's Scott Daniels had interceptions. & New Fairfield's RICH COMIZIO rushed for 175 yards and an 11-yard TD to lift Pennsylvania over Bucknell 10-7. & MVP BOB GABIANELLI (14-for-19, .736) had two hits and as many RBI to lead the Tigers over Montambo's 9-4 to win the City Open slow pitch tournament. Jeff Renker added a homer and two RBI. &. DOUG DALZIEL, head pro at Grassy Hill and two-time Connecticut Open winner, won his second Connecticut Section PGA championship with a 54-hole total of one-under 215 at Richter Park in Danbury. Pine Valley's Jack McConachie finished at eight-over 224.

10 YEARS AGO

Masuk outscored Law 49-21 as DAVE RAMOS scored on a 42-yard interception return, a 76-yard kickoff return and a 48-yard pass from Evan Walsh. Jonathan Trez (1, 28) added two TD runs and Justin Orlando returned the opening kickoff 84 yards. Brian Hicks (171, 14) starred in defeat with three TD carries (70, 1, 48). & Senior fullback TODD ALLEN rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns (2, 35) as Harding (3-0) beat Stamford 20-6. Terry Allen (115) added a 10-yard TD carry. & KEN NAPPI passed for 125 yards, including TDs to Steve Neugebauer (52) and Phil Balogh (48), and Kevin Lynch added a 36-yard run to lead St. Joseph over Norwalk 21-6. & Coach BOB ZITO'S Newtown team knocked off fourth-rated Brookfield 29-14, ending its 18-game win streak. Matt Huray (1) and Bunt (13) scored on the ground, Jeff Chuongvan on a fumble recovery in the end zone and Joey Saputo on a seven-yard pass from Peter Ivey. & BILL CARROLL was 21-for-35 passing for 243 yards and TD passes to Chuck Kinsley (45), Seth Freeman (28) and Jesse Duncan (5) but it wasn't enough as Fairfield lost to Ridgefield 28-21. & ERIC KHAN carried 20 times for 101 yards and three short-yardage touchdowns as Notre Dame-Fairfield overwhelmed Bethel 45-14. QB Thomas Wright (14-22, 172) scored on a pair of runs from in close and threw a 17-yard strike to Sean Mignone. & The freshman-laden Fairfield football team lost to MAAC rival Georgetown 59-14 before 4,565 at Alumni Field in the first varsity home game in school history. QB JIM LOPUSZNICK threw for a pair of TDs, including a nine-yarder to his brother Tom.
