The Black Rocks took over second place in the Senior City League standings by beating the Rosebuds 6-3 as BOB SPEER had three hits and St. John's 6-0 behind Matty Formon's three-hit pitching. & JOHN HOWELL allowed three hits and Mickey Homa was the top hitter as the Knights of Columbus beat the Townies 3-1 in the Fairfield League playoffs. & BEN MROZEK, Harold Savage, Al Dakai and Ron Randall led the Townies over the Western Jacksons 3-2. & The Vagabonds edged the Athletics 7-6 in the Park City League when PETE PAOLINI singled in Frank Iovino. & The Stratford Roofers beat the Raybestos Brake Liners 5-0 as RICH CAHILL homered and Frank Kuchta and Red Cowan combined on the shutout.

Manager Ed Cornwell's Picayunes, won their second straight Junior City Baseball League title. Team members included, Myles Goodson, Dick Panuczak, Nat Dennis, Mark Greggos, Jim McDonald, Ed Soares, Dennis Russell, Elmer Shea, Herbie Sutton, Clem Klansky, Joe Krevis, Lou Zayas, Ed Katuska, Mickey Buckmir, Terry Craw, Sam DiZenzo and Dick Sally. Bob Felner and Walt Tearne were the assistant coaches. The East Enders then beat New Canaan 5-0 in the first round of the ABC tournament as Panuczak pitched a five-hitter and Shea was the leading hitter. & SWEDE ERICKSON pitched a two-hitter and catcher Woody Woodruff had two hits and three RBI as Sikorsky beat SNETCO 9-0 for the Industrial League
The Raybestos Cardinals earned their 1,000th win since being established in 1948 by beating Huntington, N.Y., 5-0 and 8-1. AL YAEGER, Frank Williams and Jack Mott combined for six hits off loser Jerry Fleming and backed up the six-hit, 11-strikeout pitching of Dick Noerenberg. METRO SZERYK followed with a six-hit, 13-strikeout effort in the second game. Williams had four hits, and Mott and Howie Johnson two apiece. & The Raybestos Brakettes shut out the West Haven Superiorettes 4-0 to win the New England regionals as Donna Herbert and Bertha Tickey combined for the shutout. Pat Harrison, Carol LaRose and Tickey were the top hitters. Gerry Zambrano took the loss. & CATHY TURNBULL had four hits while Sharon Lofthouse and Terry LaKatta gave up eight hits but still managed the win as the Raybestos Robins knocked off the Bridgeport Coeds 11-6 in the Danbury Women's Invitational. Rose Zuk, Peggy Beale and Noreen Murphy divided six hits in defeat. & TOM PALMIERI and GORDON LEAHY beat Joe Kulikowski and Steve Olexovitch 1-up for the Hillandale CC Member-Guest crown. The champs got by John Downey and John Toth 2-up while Kulikowski and Olexovitch ousted Ed Segala and Dick Kopsick 1-up 20 holes. & BILL DOBER won the Birchwood CC championship over Dr. Jesse Englander 3-up in a 27-hole final. & STEVE PJURA and Dan Bruno divided four hits and as many RBI and Wally Hrabstock and Hector Rosado added two hits and as many RBI apiece as the Highlanders defeated the Lenox 8-6 in the Senior City League playoffs. Bob Murphy was the winner in relief of Si Karam. & LARRY CAPUTE, former Fairfield Prep outfielder and member of the Savoys in the SCL, won the West Haven Twilight League batting crown.

Rookie BARBARA REINALDA, who won the Bertha Tickey Award as the most outstanding pitcher and the batting title with a .429 average, pitched and batted the host Raybestos Brakettes to the ASA Women's Tournament championship with a 3-2 win over the Washington, D.C., Plain Americans before 6,500 at Memorial Field. Reinalda pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts and singled in two runs in the final. Lisa Dennis added an RBI and catcher Diane Seery and Beth Quinsel two hits apiece. Brakettes Diane Schumacher, Sue Enquist and Seery joined Reinalda on the all-tourney team. & BOB SORRENTINO pitched a three-hitter in outdueling Bill Bradshaw to lead Homeport over Turnpike Furnace 3-1 in the Senior City League President's Cup playoffs. Bob Castrignano had two hits and scored twice, Mike Reimer and Pete Tranquillo had RBI and Andy Radovic two hits. Doug Coffed had two hits and Jay Malamphy the other off Sorrentino. & Former Denver Bronco running back BO HICKEY had three hits and four RBI as Shoreline Pools of Greenwich defeated Sonny's of Westport 9-7 for the Avco Late Season Slow Pitch Tournament title. Walter Welsh's three-run homer proved to be the difference and Rich Singer earned MVP honors. Sonny's beat North End Sports 10-6 in the semis as DON GUINTA, Gary Lawrence and Dan Devito combined for nine hits. Lou Lacivita had two hits in the loss.

The Hi-Ho Brakettes finished second in the ASA Women's Major Fast Pitch tournament, losing to the California Invasion on Liz Mazera's 12th-inning home run off losing pitcher Barbara Reinalda before 3,500 in Pekin, Ill. Kris Peterson, Diane Schumacher, Pat Dufficy and LeaAnn Jarvis hit safely for the Brakettes, but were left stranded. The Invasion also beat Hi-Ho 1-0 earlier with Lisa Ishikawa taking the loss. KATHY ARENDSEN kept the Brakettes alive with her second no-hitter of the tourney over the Los Angeles Diamonds 2-0 in the losers' bracket final. Manager Ralph Raymond's club finished 51-5 and won the World Championship in New Zealand, the Challenge Cup II in British Columbia and the U.S. Olympic Festival in Houston. & BARBARA YOUNG of Aspetuck Valley in Weston, won her fourth Connecticut Women's Amateur golf championship on the third hole of sudden death over Courtney Myhrum of Westport at Blackledge in Hebron. Both had 54-hole totals of 11-over 227. & JEFF RENZULLI defeated Bud Knittle 7 and 6 to win the H. Smith Richardson club championship. Renzulli bested Nav Ottavi 2-up in the semis while Knittle ousted Glen Dobieski 3 and 2. The Senior Division crown went to WALT NIESTEMSKI, a 3 and 2 winner over Ed Liptak. & JIM NILAN won the Wheeler Park Senior championship over Don Wickert while Mike Bennett took Junior Division honors over Chris DeSanty. & BEN COSTELLO defeated Len Napoli on the first hole of sudden death to win the Mill River Senior title while Mike Simko bested Frank Spray for the over-80 crown. & DEAN FOLEY got by medalist Tony Cantanese 2-up in a 36-hole final for the club championship at Oronoque. & STELLA BONDOS of Brownson won her eighth straight Polish National Alliance of America women's title at the Foster, R.I. Country Club. & STEVE OLEXOVITCH of Tashua Knolls had rounds of 77 at Ridgewood CC in Danbury and 2-under 69 at Mill River for a 146 total to win the CSGA Seniors championship by two shots over Ben Costello (78-77 — 148) of Mill River. JOHN GENTILE of Mill River won Class A (ages 70 and over) with a 161; LEN NAPOLI took Class C (ages 60-64) over Chet Wojack on a match of cards at 158. DUANE HALEY of Hop Meadow topped Class B (55-59), one shot better than Bill Bonney of Patterson. & Forth-seeded BRAD NORTON of Trumbull, fifth-seeded Michael Sprouse of Fairfield and 14-rated Glen Welling of Westport won second-round matches in the City Trust Junior New England Tennis Championships at Yale.

Norwalk native and Milford resident JERRY COURVILLE lost to eventual champion TIGER WOODS 4 and 2 in the second round of the U.S. Amateur Championship in Cornelius, Ore. Courville shot a 3-under par 68 in qualifying to tie for second best while Woods opened with a 69. Woods, 19, won his unprecedented third title over Steve Scott on the 38th hole. & The Brakettes (30-8-1) finished tied for 12th with a 2-2 record in the ASA National Women's Major Fast Pitch tournament at AlliedSignal Field. MVP LISA FERNANDEZ led the Commotion to the championship, including a 10-0 win over the California Jazz in the finals before 4,461. & ALEX O'BRIEN won the Pilot Pen International singles title over Jan Siemerink before 10,224. & SWEDE LAVERS of Stratford won his 11th career pro duckpin bowling tournament at Johnston, R.I., winning eight of his nine matches. & Southington native and Boston Red Sox farmhand CARL PAVANO was selected Eastern League pitcher of the year with a 14-5 record and a 2.69 ERA for Class AA Trenton. & JOHN COCCA pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in outdueling Bob Stowers and Billy Thomes singled in Phil Pacelli with the winning run as Fedell's nipped Bellows Chiropractic 1-0 to win the Senior City League's Rich Pinto Presidents Cup Playoffs. n
