In City Softball League action Red Moffett's All-Stars edged National AC 1-0 on RED COWAN's one-hitter; the Paramounts blanked the Ramblers 7-0 behind BEEFY HARGUS' one-hit effort; BABE GIORDANO pitched the Ramblers over the Puritans 10-2; and the Paramounts beat Jimmy's Market 4-1 as LLOYD PECK starred. & In Senior City League action, the Lenox AA beat the Americans 4-3 in 16 innings to win the Senior City League's first half title as TAFFY PITTU doubled and scored the winning run on an error; BILL POWLEY and Franzese combined for four hits for the Rosebuds in a 12-3 win over the Newfields; DAVE MILLS struck out 16 as the Americans nipped St. John's 2-0; Mills also pitched a two-hitter and JOHN BUSCHBAUM and Ed Tickey were the top hitters in a 5-1 win over the Newfields; CHARLIE ANDREWS of the Lenox zipped the Red Devils 7-0; Black Rock ripped the White Eagles 12-1 on KEN FRISBIE'S two-hitter and the Springwoods ripped the Newfields 18-3 as BILL RIELY had three hits. & GUS LESNEVICH and Rabbit Maranville were the featured speakers at the Boys Club awards dinner. & Holy Name League play saw MIKE O'KEEFE lift St. Ambrose over Blessed Sacrament 6-2; BILL BASTA allow six hits as Sacred Heart shut out St. Joseph 4-0; VIN BANKA pitch St. Mary over St. Cyril 6-2 and JOE IOVINO and Joe DiCecco hit hard as St. Raphael beat St. Charles 12-3; and HARP O'NEIL and George Petrovich combined to pitch a one-hitter

PADDY DEMARCO, former world lightweight champ from Brooklyn, and Irish Pat Mallane, a bruiser from Union City, N.J., brawled to a 10-round draw as referee Ed Moore issued warnings to both fighters for rough tactics before a crowd of 8,700 at Hedges Stadium in a PBA sponsored event. Stratford's ART SUFFOLETTA, a promising welterweight who was making his first appearance in the ring since his discharge from the Navy, TKOed Johnny Parker of Springfield, Mass., in the second round. On the undercard Ed DeMars of West Springfield, Mass., knocked out Bridgeport's Tommy Black and Joe Wolcott outpointed fellow Bridgeporter Lou Meyers. PINKY MORRIS officiated the first three bouts. & SWEDE ERICKSON pitched a three-hitter as Sikorsky beat the Raybestos Brake Liners 2-0 to win the Industrial Softball National Division title. Woody Woodruff singled in John Sandor and Irv Liskov scored on an error. & JOHN SPRING outdueled Ray Stephenson and Tony Pagliuca tripled and scored on Ed Tickey's sac fly as the Raybestos Cardinals shut out De Jur Amsco 1-0. & JOHN BRUZAS pitched a three-hitter and Eric Vasse had three hits to lead the Lenox over the Western Jacksons 14-2 in the Senior City League. & The White Eagles shut down Stratford PAL 11-0 as DICK PANUCZAK, who starred at Harding High in the spring, pitched a three-hitter. Vin Corda drove in five runs on two hits and Frank Vieira had three hits off losing pitcher Bucky Christiansen. & Former Central High and Yale standout JOHN SCINTO continued his stellar play at second base for Palatka in the Florida State League by scoring five times in a 19-7 win over West Palm Beach. & CHARLEY BELZER was featured in Ed Shugrue's Between Ourselves column.

Winning pitcher JIM LOVELETTE hit a three-run homer, Sal Manforte a two-run shot and Tom DeFeo had two hits and two RBI to lead the Lenox over the Kobus Kats 9-7 in Senior City Baseball League action. Losing pitcher Ken Kohanowski had two hits and two RBI, Ernie Haferstat two hits and three RBI and Brian Hourigan two RBI. & The Lenox also blanked the Nationals 8-0 behind FRED LIGGINS' one-hit pitching. DeFeo had a hit and two RBI and Bob Greenwood two hits and an RBI. & Bridgeport nipped Norwalk 3-2 for the Colt Sectional crown as Ron Steele and Nick Posh scored on PAUL SULZICKI'S long triple. Rich Anderson was the winner with a three-hitter while losing pitcher Gary Katz doubled in Joe Liberatore and Sal Bartolo. & RON FRENCH, Ben Crenshaw, Al Yaeger and Jack Mott had sac flies in support of winning pitcher Metro Szeryk as the Raybestos Cardinals beat the Local 57 Engineers from Providence 4-2. The Redbirds lost the nightcap 1-0 as Ray Judd outdueled Dick Noerenberg. & BOB POST, a rookie from the USMMA, and former U. of Michigan QB Bob Timberlake continued their battle for the No. 3 spot as the New York Giants scrimmaged before a crowd of 8,000 at Fairfield University. Gary Woods appears to have earned the backup slot for Earl Morral.

ALICE COURSEN outdueled Kathy Vitelli and Liz Bove doubled in Sandy Cloutier as manager Ed Macciocca's Bridgeport Coeds advanced to the ASA regionals by edging the Pet-Car Blazers 1-0 at Memorial Field. & The Connecticut Falcons defeated the Southern California Gems 4-2 for a split of their IWPSA doubleheader at Ceppa Field in Meriden as JOAN JOYCE (18-1) pitched a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Irene Shea had two doubles and Sharon Backus two singles. & Nick Lanese's New Frontier Restaurant earned a spot in the CASA Sectionals with a 14-12 win over Anzy's as LOU LACIVITA had four hits. Winning pitcher Warren Harding, Lou Tranquillo and Tom Morgan divided nine hits. Frank Delgado and Frank Sinchak had three hits apiece in defeat. & Turnpike Furnace outscored the Bridgeport A's 12-6 in the Senior City League as BOB WRIGHT turned in five innings of one-hit relief. Bruce Fitzpatrick, Neil Karker and Rich DiBiaso were the top hitters. Chris Boyle had two hits in defeat. & Molly's AA set back the Merit Insurance Nationals 9-4 as PAUL MARCINIAK and Bob Turcio had three RBI apiece off losing pitcher Frank Timmeny. Phil Nastu doubled and tripled in the loss. & On the national scene JOHN MILLER won the British Open in Southport, England, by outshooting Jack Nicklaus and 19-year-old Seve Ballesteros by six shots, the widest margin in the Open in 40 years.

CARY SCIORRA of Tashua Knolls defeated Joe Serino of Wheeler Park 2 and 1 to win the 39th annual District Golf championship on the Black Course at Wheeler. Sciorra defeated defending champion and reigning Connecticut Amateur champ John Ruby of Mill River 3 and 2, fellow Tashua member Dan Dobas 6 and 5 and Dr. Mike Cavielere of Mill River 2 and 1 to reach the finals. Serino ousted medalist Tashua's Dan Watkins (2-under-par 69), 21 holes in the semis. Other former District winners in the field were Joe Gloria (1981), Tim Pocock (1977, '84), Gary Timpany (1971) and Ben Costello (1963, '69, '70). Alpheus Winter of Brooklawn is the only four-time winner. In the senior finals AL SAROSKY defeated Jim Nilan 4 and 3. In the semis Sarosky eliminated Swede Erickson 2 and 1 and Nilan knocked off Mario Amaral 5 and 4. All four senior finalists are from Wheeler Park. & BARBARA REINALDA and KATHY ARENDSEN posted shutouts as the Hi-Ho Brakettes won a pair of games at the Challenge II series in New Westminster, Canada. Chris DiNoto had two hits and Jackie Gaw an RBI single in a 6-0 win over China-Taipei in the opener as Reinalda spaced seven hits. Dottie Richardson's first-inning homer provided Arendsen with the only run she needed in a 1-0 victory over Long Beach, Calif., Renegades.

The Patterson Club's head pro BRENDAN WALSH posted a 54-hole total of five-under-par 208 (71-70-67) to win the CSGA Connecticut Open at his home club in Fairfield. Watertown amateur Joe Dennis was three shots back at 211 to finish second while TCU All-American J.J. Henry of Patterson was third with a 212. & Coach Joe DeSabia's Trumbull Legion team (17-7) finished second in Zone IV standings behind Fairfield (19-5) with a 5-1, 6-1 sweep of Stamford behind the pitching of ROB BLEVINS and Brian Sheehy. & Winning pitcher BRIAN MEDINA settled down after a shaky first inning as coach Justin Jiminez' Bridgeport team nipped Jersey City 4-3 at Yale Field to win the Northeast Regional of the Senior Reviving Baseball in the Innercity for 16-18 year olds and earn a spot in the RBI World Series at Jacobs Field in Cleveland. Lilo Carabillo had an RBI double and Macho Burgos an RBI single. & JAMIE D'ANTONA had three hits and four RBI, Ryan Bucci three hits and three RBI and Mike Boileau three hits to power coach Neil Stollman's Trumbull team to the 14-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament championship with an 11-2 win over Norwalk at Unity Park. Mike Buswell pitched four innings of hitless relief for the win. & STEVIE RYAN and Sean Dolyak combined to pitch a three hitter and Trevor Meinke had two hits but it wasn't enough as Trumbull stranded 11 runners and was ousted from the New England Regional 13-year-old tournament by Eastern Massachusetts 1-0. & Coach Bruce Peck's Ansonia team nipped Stamford 4-3 to win the state Senior Babe Ruth championship when winning pitcher STEVE STONOHA executed a perfect suicide squeeze that scored Ben Mikula in the last of the seventh. Mikula and Brian Woods had RBI doubles. Tony Ferro was the loser in relief of Chris DeBrisco. n
