Joe Koripsky, Lou Chmielewski and George Petrovich combined for six hits in support of AL BIKE'S four-hit pitching as the Springwoods opened defense of their Senior City League title by beating the Lenox AA 4-2. & BERNIE IASSOGNA singled, doubled and tripled to lead the White Eagles over the Rosebuds 3-1 while MOE CHEECKS' two-hit pitching lifted the Americans over the White Eagles 6-0 and PAT TIBERIO'S stellar play carried the Vagabonds over the Park City Giants 9-6. & St. Cyril opened play in the Holy Name Baseball League by beating St. John's 5-2 as JOHN MOJCHER had two hits while HANK MCCABE'S two hits powered Sacred Heart over St. Charles 6-4; RAY MAZZUCCO pitched a three-hitter and Joe Iovino had three hits as St. Raphael beat Blessed Sacrament 6-1 and MIKE O'KEEFE'S two hits helped St. Ambrose over St. Mary 6-1. & PETE SULZICKI led the attack as the Paramounts won first half laurels in the City Softball League by beating Jimmy's Market 7-4. & TAFFY PITTU and George Wright showed the way as Bassick defeated Danbury 10-2 while the Lions also knocked off Stratford 2-0 behind TONY RASHAN'S two-hit pitching. & Fairfield Prep edged Central 6-5 as winning pitcher BILL FLYNN, Fred Horvath and Dick Shea had two hits apiece. & Ludlowe nipped Central 1-0 as JACK KAVULICH tripled in Maitland McNamara. 50 YEARS AGO

championship by defeating fellow clubmate Artie Williams 3 and 2 before a crowd of nearly 400 in a scheduled 36-hole final. Winter, a machine designer who also won at Greenwich in 1948, eliminated former New York Giants pro football player Bob Tarrant from Ridgewood 1-up in the semis while Williams bested another Brooklawn member Billy Booe 3 and 2 in the semis. Booe had taken the measure of one of the tourney favorites Dr. Ted Lenczyk of Indian Hill 2 and 1. AL FUCHS of Mill River and Lenczyk were co-medalists with one-over-par 143's. Dick Kopsick (157) and George Strich (158) of Wheeler also qualified for match play, but both lost in first-round matches as did Fuchs and defending champion Dick Siderowf of Indian Hills. WALTER KLINGER of Mill River defeated Larry Doyle of Wheeler for the Senior Division crown. Klinger ousted John Pjura, Sr. of Mill River in the semis. & President TOM DEFONCE opened the Bridgeport Senior City League as the White Eagles shut out the Lenox AA 3-0 behind Ernie Santo's six-hit, seven-strikeout pitching and the hitting of Charlie Pike, Jerry Ringel and Ed Hall. & BUCK CHRISTIANSEN pitched a two-hitter in outdueling John Bruzas and Lee Navroth doubled in Ron French and Jim Scholz in the last of the seventh as Stratford PAL edged the Lenox AA 2-1. & STEVE SHERMAN was elected president and John Estock Athletic Director of the Springwood Athletic Club. & CHICO VEJAR of Stamford earned a close decision over Gus Rubincini of Toronto in Miami Beach in a furious 10-rounder. & JOE VANCISIN, who starred at Bassick High School and Dartmouth and was an assistant at Minnesota the last eight seasons, was named head basketball coach at Yale. The former Middle Street Boys Club member beat out 60 applicants and takes over for Howard Hobson, who resigned after nine years. & MIKE MIKLUS, an assistant under Ed Reilly at Central, was named head football coach at Derby High School.

40 YEARS AGO

JESUS LLANOS of Bassick won the CIAC State Open 100-yard dash in a time of 10.1. & The Raybestos Cardinals swept the Norwalk Eagles 8-2 and 14-0 at Memorial Field. METRO SZERYK was the winner over Rocky Marucci in the opener as Bruce Cranshaw, Don Drake, John Anquillare and Howie Johnson were the top hitters. Cec Gabriel and Bob Giglio had two hits each in defeat. Catcher JIM LOWE knocked in six RBI on two hits as Dick Noerenberg was the winner in the nightcap. & DAN ESPOSITO beat Bob Halky on the second hole of sudden death to win the annual D. Fairchild Wheeler one-day tournament. Esposito, a UConn junior who was runner-up in last year's New England Intercollegiate tournament, and Halky, a former Wheeler club and district champ, carded even par 71's. Sam Petrone, the defending champ, and Duane Haley had 74's. & Former basketball stars JACK O'CONNELL and Bob Gerwein and Jack Redway, who starred in baseball and later served as baseball coach, were the first inductees into the Fairfield University Athletic Hall of Fame. 30 YEARS AGO

Kolbe's JOHN THOMAS won the 220 and 440-yard dashes, setting a Class S record in the latter (50.4) and anchored the Friars' record-setting 440 relay team (44.7) to highlight the CIAC Class S track meet. Paul Tavaras, Jonathan Freeman and Vaughan Sims joined Thomas on the relay team. ED CASEY of St. Joseph was second behind Thomas in the 440 with a time of 51 flat and anchored the Cadets' winning effort in the 4x400 relay as Jerry Lemay, Jon Welch and George Tate participated in the time of 3:35.3. The Cadets and Friars tied for sixth with 30 points while Derby won the team title with 69 points. & BETH NORTON of Fairfield was defeated by Ilana Kloss, top-seeded South African player, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round of a women's pro tennis tournament in Amelia Island, Fla. & Fairfield shortstop BOB KOWNACKI was named to the All New England baseball team for the second straight season. The former Central High flash led the Stags at the plate with a .381 average, fourth best in New England. & Masuk's MIKE GMINSKI, Law's Doug Romatzick, Al Carfora of East Haven and Sly Williams of Lee High School of New Haven were the state players named to the All-America Basketball team. & Avco Lycoming swept both halves of the YMCA Industrial Duckpin Bowling League. Team members include: John Zadravec, Joe Russo (high average of 120), Bob Matteson, Fred Anctil, John Salmon, Frank Paola and George Tuscaeff. & PAUL KOSTOPOLUS of Law, APRIL HUNT of Foran and MIKE ALLEGRA of Milford were honored by the Pitchfork Athletic Club at its fourth annual Scholarship Awards Dinner. & TONY MASTRONARDI posted a one-under par 70 to win the annual One Day Tournament at D. Fairchild Wheeler over 150 players. Joe Serino, Stan Lugovich and Steve Olexovich tied for second three shots back. Howard Davis of Smith Richardson came in with an 83-15 — 68 to win low net honors. 20 YEARS AGO

Senior first baseman BOB OLAH of Notre Dame of Fairfield, a recent 28th round selection of the New York Mets, signed a minor league contract and will report to their Class A affiliate in Kingston, Tenn. & Former Fairfield Prep standout MATT MERULLO, a junior catcher at the University of North Carolina, signed with the Chicago White Sox after being their seventh-round pick and will report to their Class A Peninsula team in Virginia Beach, Va. . & BRIAN LEETCH of Cheshire and Avon Old Farms was the top pick of the New York Rangers and the No. 9 player chosen overall in the NHL draft. & The All-MBIAC baseball team consisted of: MVP RALPH LOPEZ, Peter Yarasavich, Chris Pryzbylinski, Ralph Medina and Mike Paz of Bullard-Havens; Gregg Micinilio, Ariel Vasquez, Marcus Laracuente and Greg McCarthy of Central; Manny Falcon, Mike Ramirez, Alex Ruiz and Jose Escobar, Harding. & RICK SOBIERAJ had three hits, including a two-run triple, and Luis Cuevas spaced seven hits to lead Stratford Post 42 over Post 141 of Trumbull 6-4. & The Avco Lycoming Textron slow pitch team won the Rhode Island East Coast ASA tournament with five straight victories. The defending state Class A Industrial champs dominated the all-tourney team with six picks, led by MVP JOHN TOKARZ, Ed Finnegan, Duke Mattern, Mike Iovene, Lorenzo Pettway and Jeff Renker.

DIANE POTKAY, Derby's record-setting shot putter and discus thrower who is headed to Yale in the fall, and STEVE COUGHLIN, Ansonia's football, basketball and baseball standout who is headed to Stanford, were honored as the 1995-96 Connecticut Post Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively. & Fairfield High junior JAMES BLAKE (25-0) breezed to the CIAC State Open tennis title by beating Wilton's John Portlock 6-2, 6-2 in the finals. & Two-time defending state amateur champion J.J. HENRY of The Patterson Club lost to Kevin Gai of Goodwin Park 2 and 1 in the semifinals at the Country Club of Farmington. Gai, a former All-American at Texas-El Paso, beat Kyle Gallo of Timberlin GC 6 and 4 in the finals. & Trumbull's JOE MOYER of Tashua Knolls won a five-way playoff that included Bob Smith of Smith Richardson to earn the New England Public Links Senior Championship at Simsbury Farms. The group had 3-over par 75's. & Fairfield native CHARLES NAGY (10-1) became the American League's first 10-game winner and Manny Ramirez homered as the Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland Athletics 5-4. & Three UConn Huskies were selected in the NBA draft. Guard RAY ALLEN was a first-round pick and fifth overall of the Minnesota Timberwolves and was then traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Center Travis Knight was taken by the World Champion Chicago Bulls with the 29th and final pick of the first round. Guard Doron Sheffer went in the second round to the Los Angeles Clippers at No. 36.
