BRUCE SMACKEY pitched a two-hitter and John Giampaolo and Tom Boiano combined for six hits in Central's 7-0 win over Bullard-Havens. & BILL ROBINSON continued his fine pitching for Fairfield Prep with a two-hit, 13-strikeout effort as the Jesuits defeated Stamford 12-1. Joe Sikorski collected three hits, including a three-run homer, while Dan Coombs (RBI triple), Ed Grella and Jay Zielinski had two hits apiece. & Coach Ray Stoviak's Milford team edged Central 4-3 as WALT JOY picked up the win and Bill Morse tripled in a pair of runs and Bill Schrader tripled in another. Bill Terwilliger had a two-run double and Ron Franzese an RBI single for the Hilltoppers. & DICK ROSS pitched a one-hitter and Bob Kuhar singled in a run as Stratford set back Bassick 3-1. Joe Buckley singled with one out in the fifth to deny Ross the no-hit bid. Marty Solomon pitched well in defeat, giving up five hits and not allowing an earned run. ... Bridgeport edged Fairfield 2-1 in college action before a Wisteria weekend crown of more than 500 at Seaside Park as NORM O'DONNELL handcuffed the Stags on two-hits and 10 strikeouts. Loren Beresnyak had a pair of disputed doubles over the trees in right field and Jerry McDougall an RBI single. Ed Cerulli pitched well in defeat, allowing five hits, and scoring the Stags run on Bill Dunn's single.

triple, and Bill McCarthy pitched brilliant ball over the last five innings after a shaky start as coach Joe Cuzzola's Fairfield Prep team nipped Notre Dame 4-3 for the MBIAC championship. Lyddy also singled in McCarthy with the winning with two out in the bottom of the seventh off losing pitcher Dave Baye. Joe Galatie and Jose DeLeon had RBI singles in the loss. & Junior ED MEDVECKY pitched a no-hitter and scored both runs as Stratford shut out Central 2-0. Billy Penders had an RBI double and Fran Winner a sac fly. Jeff Leichtman pitched well in defeat, giving up six hits. & Junior lefty RON BODNAR allowed one-hit, a single by Delanie Baldwin in the fourth inning, and Al Mack had a three-run double to lead coach Herb Harrington's Bassick team over Harding 5-0. &GENE GOLINO and Steve Plucker had RBI doubles in support of winning pitcher Pat McDonough in Warde's 3-2 win over Trumbull. Howie Knepler had Trumbull's RBI and losing pitcher Dick Anderson two hits. & Pinch-hitter STEVE SHULLICK had a two-run triple, Al Moschetti three hits and Scott Vaughn two hits and as many RBI as Bunnell closed out its season 4-12 with a 10-4 win over Law. & RICKY NEEDHAM of Law bested Milford's Neal Swanson 1-0 in a battle of three-hitters. Dale Lance's first-inning single scored Bob Sylvia for the game winner. 30 YEARS AGO

Pinch-hitter MARCIAL DELGADO drilled a two-out, two-run triple in the eighth inning after Bob Velky had tied the score at 6-6 with an RBI single as Sacred Heart posted an 8-6 win over New Haven to win the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional and a trip to the World Series in Springfield, Ill. Starter Paul Marciniak went 7 innings and was outstanding in working on just one day's rest as reliever Junior Viens earned the win. Frank Timmeny added two hits and scored twice for SHU while Pete Tranquillo had a pair of hits for UNH. Viens, Marciniak and Dennis Burke combined for a 4-0 tourney record allowing only 24 hits. Coach Pete DiOrio's Pioneers opened with an 11-3 win over LeMoyne as JOE RIETANO collected four hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBI and DelGado delivered a grand slam. ... Fairfield Prep won the MBIAC championship by edging St. Joseph 3-2 in the rubber game of the best-of-three series at Penders Field as sophomore JOHN JACQUES pitched six scoreless in relief. Dan Mulrooney had a two-run triple and scored what proved to be the winning run on Rob Caseria's sac fly. The Cadets had forced the if game with a 10-2 win as John DeDonato had a two-run triple, Maurice Kiely and Dan Harrigan two-run doubles and Ron Carapezzi a two-run single. & MARY PEKAR pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11 and Kathy Bodnar hit a three-run homer to lead Central over Notre Dame 12-3 for the MBIAC softball title. Losing pitcher Karen Karosy had two hits. & Law's BOB LINDEN posted his second career no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Lee. Linden added an RBI double and Rich and Mark McLeod RBI singles. & Shelton (17-0) won the Housatonic League title over Branford 7-2 as winning pitcher GEORGE FRENCH had an RBI single, Tom Norko two RBI singles and Scott Wakeman a two-run single. ... The new Bridgeport Jai Alai fronton on Kossuth Street opened with a crowd of 5,239 on hand. & RAY HOWELL of The Patterson Club fired rounds of 72-67 for a 3-under par 139 and medalist honors in local qualifying for the U.S. Open at the New Haven Country Club. Curtis team member LESLIE SHANNON of Milford reached the finals of the North and South Amateur golf championship at Pinehurst, N.C., by beating Toni Wiesner 6 and 5. & ERIC MEERBACH of Easton and Worcester Polytechnic Institute won the NCAA Division III national golf championship by one shot with a 72-hole total of 12-over par 296 in Exeter, Pa. Meerbach, who plays out of D. Fairchild Wheeler, led from start to finish. & Trumbull defeated defending champion Staples 6-0 in the FCIAC finals behind the one-hit, 12-strikeout pitching of BOB VANCHO and a bases-loaded triple by DH Joe Yacovacci. Perry Oliphant's leadoff single in the fifth spoiled Vancho's no-hit bid. & Bunnell held on for a 3-2 win over Stratford for the CCIAC title, completing a triple crown for the Bulldogs as they also won the league football and basketball crowns. JOHN AMOROSO was the winner with seventh-inning relief help from Luis Cuevas while Scott Szturma, John Dellapiano and Jesse Bike had RBI singles and Clayton Brown two hits for coach Dave Jezierny. Ron Porto had a two-run single and Lou Bonaventura two hits for the Red Devils, who got a solid seven-hit effort from starter Ed Buckmir. & Winning pitcher DARREN TOTH was in command throughout, spacing seven hits, and added a two-run double as coach John Giampaolo's Masuk team swamped Immaculate 17-4 for the WCC championship. Ron Lombardi had a two-run double and Greg Venditti two RBI.

Foran sophomore KEN CATINO pitched eight hitless innings with 12 strikeouts, but was done in by an infield single and a passed ball in a 1-0 nine-inning loss to Immaculate in the South-West Conference semifinals. Sean Lomas was the winner in relief of Al Vasquez. & St. Joseph handed Fairfield its first loss 3-1 in the FCIAC volleyball finals as sophomore AL HANFORD was named the finals MVP with 18 kills. Senior Billy Taylor led coach George Greene's Cadets with 29 service points. & Frank "Porky Vieira, Carl Peterson and Bob Hustek were honored as Outstanding Athletes by the Greater Bridgeport Oldtimers Athletic Association. Charles Vogler (Sherwood Award), John Giampaolo (Outstanding Sportsman) and Ed O'Connell (Past Presidents award) were also honored.
