In Senior City Baseball League action, FRED REICHERT pitched a two-hitter as the Rosebuds blanked the Black Rocks 4-0 while the White Eagles edged the Springwoods 2-1 as Hal Decker's single scored AUGIE LACAVALLE with the winning run in the 12th inning. & FRANK PIASCIK'S five RBI lifted the Lenox AA over the Newfields 8-3. & In high school baseball Stratford bested Harding 6-1 as sophomore BILL ANDERSON gave up four hits although the Presidents were the first team to score off him in three games. & PIERRE VAPORIS' strong pitching led Bassick over Ludlowe 2-1 after the Lions had suffered a 7-1 loss to Norwalk with Taffy Pittu scoring the lone run. & GEORGE SACCONE pitched a four-hitter and Lou Saccone had two hits in Harding's 4-2 win over Central. & MARTY RADOMSKI rolled a 210 game to break the Boston Alleys duckpin record.

High school baseball saw Stratford beat Milford 3-1 as winning pitcher LOU HORNER singled in Jim Walkley with the winning run in the ninth inning. Horner spaced seven hits for the win and also doubled in a run off losing pitcher Al Hall. The Indians scored on singles by Bill Schrader, Dick Harcherik and Bob Shock. & Bullard-Havens used the effective four-hit, 10-strikeout pitching of BILL WILLIAMSON and Ed Brighindi hit a two-run homer with Bob Soltisiak on board to pin a 2-0 loss on Harding. Dick Panuczak pitched well in defeat, allowing five hits and striking
TOM DEFEO had the lone RBI and Al Berarducci pitched well in defeat, spacing eight hits and striking out three, in Bridgeport's 3-1 loss to Providence. Sophomore shortstop Steve Saradnik, who turned down $40,000 to sign a pro contract, led the Friars with four hits and two RBI. & Second baseman TERRY TOIGO was selected MVP of Gene Casey's Southern Connecticut team with a .280 batting average and eight stolen bases. & Fairfield nipped Quinnipiac 4-3 as the Stags scored all four runs in the ninth, capped by PETE GILLEN'S RBI single off losing pitcher Dan Ford. Paul Garstka, Pete Odlum, Al Vestro and John Walsh also had key hits. & In high school baseball Stratford turned back Bunnell 3-1 as RON DEFEO allowed six hits and drove in a run. Mike Kowalski singled in Roy Boyko off losing pitcher Steve Schullick. Al Pistey scored on a single by Jim Stalus in the loss. & Freshman MIKE DIPIETRO gave up one hit over the first four innings and Barry Martin finished up in scoreless fashion in Central's 6-2 win over Harding. Jeff Leichtman had three hits, including a three-run homer, and Tom Sautter two hits. Second baseman Winston Davis set a school record with 45 straight chances without an error. John Moretti had the Presidents' lone RBI. & Stamford Catholic shut out Warde 4-0 behind the three-hit pitching of BENNETT SALVATORE. Bart Waldman took the loss while Bill Beaudin, Greg Golino and Pat McDonough had Warde's hits. & Coach Cliff Moxim's Notre Dame team nipped Law 7-6 as TONY PILUSO collected four hits and drove in two runs, including winning pitcher Dave Baye with the deciding run in the ninth. Baye gave up nine hits but fanned 12 while Joe Galatie had two RBI and Jose Deleon three stolen bases.

Housatonic Community College got by Tunxis 5-4 in the semifinals of the state tournament on Paul Rega's RBI single that scored Ted Kunzik with the winning run in the eighth. JIM JAGODZINSKI gave up seven hits but fanned 12 while helping his own cause with three hits. & High school action had Ludlowe nipping Darien 3-2 as ART VON SCHLESINGER pitched the final 6 innings in scoreless fashion. Ed Mauri scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the third and Jim Barletto scored on Brian Curry's double. & CRAIG JONES turned in a two-hit, nine-strikeout effort and added a two-run single to lead Fairfield Prep over Stratford 4-2. Gary Feller's singled in the sixth to break up Jones' no-hit bid. & Bullard-Havens set back Kolbe 3-1 as RAY RICKS outdueled Tom Reilly for the win. Malley Harding and Mike Lesko led the Tigers at the plate. Brian McMahon doubled in Kolbe's run. & St. Joseph outscored Central 10-7 behind the offense of SEAN PEDDLE, Tim Shea, Henry Moraes, Kevin Moran and Dan Harrigan. Mickey Camerato outlasted Rich Tasi for the win. Andy Lanham and Larry Gill led the Hilltoppers at the plate. & Shelton edged Derby 2-1 as TOM NORKO worked out of a no-out, second and third jam in the seventh. Daryl DeMarco had two of the three hits off tough-luck loser Jim Wasikowski. & NUREAL MONTALBAN'S single scored Ken Spears with the winning run in the last of the seventh off losing pitcher Louis Maldanado to lift coach Ray Doran's Harding team over Bassick 6-5. Central's GREG MCCARTHY turned in one of the most noteworthy pitching efforts in area high school baseball history as the junior lefty recorded a pair of complete game victories as the Hilltoppers swept Notre Dame of Fairfield 15-2 and 4-0 and qualified for the state tournament. McCarthy struck out 14 and gave up four hits in the first game and followed with 14 more strikeouts while allowing only two hits in the nightcap. Greg Micinilo had three hits and two RBI and Marcus Laracuente and Larry Ferraro combined for four hits and as many RBI in the first game. Ray Rivera had a two-run homer in defeat. Al Carrara pitched well in taking the second game defeat, allowing six hits. & Senior lefty MIKE SCIORTINO (8-1) pitched a one-hitter (a leadoff triple to Gregg Radachowsky in the first inning) with eight strikeouts as Trumbull blanked Danbury 9-0 in the FCIAC semifinals. Mark Allen collected three hits and two RBI, Gene Vadas three hits and one RBI and Bob Vancho two doubles. & Staples nicked Stamford starter Craig Gaudio for four unearned runs and backed up winner PERRY OLIPHANT (five-hitter) with some sparkling defensive work in the other semi. Dave Stanton and Tim Carter (RBI triple) drove in runs and Oliphant had three hits.

MVP RICH TRIMBOLI pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts as coach Pete Tucci's Norwalk team became the first seventh-seeded team to win the FCIAC championship with a 9-2 decision over Trumbull at Cubetta Stadium. Tim Brown had an RBI triple, Brian Baker an RBI triple, Jon Crowe a two-run double and Steve Walbrink an RBI double. Craig Breslow took the loss. & Trumbull had knocked out cross-town rival St. Joseph 7-1 in the quarterfinals behind ROB BLEVINS' five-hit pitching and a pair of RBI singles by Eric Ondy. Jon Karolus and Steve Fasano added RBI singles and Bryan Duffy a sac fly. Jim Chaves singled in the Cadets' run. & Trumbull then handed Greenwich (22-1) its first loss of the season 8-6 in nine innings in the semifinals. & Pinch hitter EFRAIN ORTIZ'S two-out RBI single in the last of the sixth gave Foran a 4-3 SWC quarterfinal win over Notre Dame-Fairfield. Jason Ruggiero (8-1) was the winner with eight strikeouts. Ryan Antonio scored on John Bufort's double in the sixth to tie the game. Jay Werthman suffered the loss and had two hits and two RBI and John Santacroce an RBI single. & JIM FITZPATRCIK holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to give Fairfield Prep the championship of the 26th annual Chappa Two-Ball Invitational at Longshore. Prep, Fairfield and Immaculate all tied for first in the better-ball tournament at 1-under 67. Fitzpatrick was paired with David Knott while Kevin Henry and Chris Mastronardi comprised the Fairfield team. n
