It won't be long now. By the end of the week, most of the New York Islanders organization will be in Nova Scotia for training camp.

Just a bit more than two weeks later, Sept. 25, the group will split up, a bunch of players will arrive in Connecticut, and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers will open their training camp at The Rinks at Shelton. A tumultuous five months — two new general managers, a wholesale change in coaching staffs — will come to an end with a new start. As Thursday's flight approaches, the Islanders released their training-camp roster Sunday, with some interesting names on the list. For instance, the well-traveled Ferraro twins could ultimately play in Bridgeport, a ferry ride away from their Long Island home. Peter — the right winger who was the New York Rangers' first-round pick in 1992 — signed with the Islanders late last month. His brother Chris — the centerman, a fourth-round Rangers pick — will attend camp on a tryout.

The twins, 33, played in Germany last year. These additions go along with two other returning players, as Jason Guerriero and Kevin Mitchell, will be back in the organization on AHL deals. Centerman Guerriero came to the Sound Tigers after his senior year at Northeastern in 2004-05 and scored six points in 11 games. He played in Finland last year. Mitchell, an offensive-minded defenseman who played in Germany last year, scored five points in 18 games in 2002-03. And to possibly provide

goaltending depth, Chris Madden will come to NHL camp on a tryout. Madden signed with the Islanders last fall and played for the Sound Tigers. He was on his way to a career year — his 3.05 goals-against average and .907 save percentage might have been better if not for atrocious early season defense in front of him — when he suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee Dec. 2. He didn't play again and had season-ending surgery Jan. 18. Bridgeport also recently signed right winger Colin Hemingway and defenseman Drew Fata, though they won't be going to Nova Scotia. Hemingway, 26, is a University of New Hampshire product who played the past three seasons in the St. Louis Blues' organization. He made his NHL debut last season, but injuries limited him to a combined 38 games in three leagues. Fata, 23, played the past three seasons in the Pittsburgh organization, split almost evenly between the AHL and the ECHL. The Islanders have a couple of roster questions to settle before their Oct. 5 opener at Phoenix; the trickle-down effect will determine which young players will start the season with the Sound Tigers in Binghamton, N.Y., Oct. 8. The parent club still needs to sign No. 1 goalie Rick DiPietro, and then fill the No. 2 job — vacated when Garth Snow became general manager July 18 — with Sound Tigers mainstay Wade Dubielewicz or with a veteran free agent.
