MILFORD — An Ansonia man was sentenced Tuesday to serve six years in prison for attacking the man he found in bed with his ex-girlfriend last year, when he and another man broke into her Seymour apartment.

Carl McMichael Jr., 25, of Fifth Street, was sentenced by Milford Superior Court Judge Trial Referee John Ronan to 12 years in prison, suspended after six, and five years of probation as part of a plea bargain. He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

His accomplice, 22-year-old Antonio Machado, of North Main Street, in Ansonia, received a one-year suspended sentence and two years of probation after pleading guilty to interfering with an emergency call and unlawful restraint.

Police said McMichael and Machado broke into the apartment of McMichael's 23-year-old ex-girlfriend at 2 a.m. April 7, 2007, and beat up the Seymour man, 23, they found with her.

Police said the man's neck was bleeding and he'd suffered several cuts from a knife. He was treated at Griffin Hospital, Derby, and released. During the assault, the woman tried to dial 911, but Machado took her telephone away, police said.

Police found 4 grams of crack cocaine and numerous empty drug bags in the car the two men parked outside the Chamberlain Road apartment, managed by the Seymour Housing Authority.

Machado and McMichael initially faced more charges that included first-degree assault,
