I promised last fall that I'd let you know how I was doing with losing weight.

A year has passed and I am still nowhere near the size of a Barbie doll. But that's OK, that's not my goal. What can I say, I have big bones!

Everyone has choices on how they want to lose weight. Some may undergo surgery, while others may choose a support group, join a gym, or order pre-packaged food plans.

In the past, I've tried some of these programs unsuccessfully. This time, I am trying to eat healthier and I'm taking the weight off slowly, using the same method I used when I put this extra weight on - with a spoon and a fork.

I'm happy to report that I have lost 20 pounds so far and am keeping the weight off. I'm down one dress size and I only have two dress sizes to go and I'll be satisfied. It's true we are what we eat. For me, it's more fruits and vegetables.

I'm not cooking fried foods. I'm baking, broiling or using the microwave. I've even learned to like tofu.

Occasionally, I go to Edge of the Woods in New Haven for a nice organic take-out dish. One of my friends, Shirley, has given me some helpful advice on how to eat healthier. I appreciate her advice; she's like a big sister with all her knowledge of health foods.

I also eat more organic products, but not everything. I have read books on eating for your blood type, which has been very useful, too.

If I want a nice 16-ounce steak, I'll eat it, or if I want juicy ribs, I eat them. I won't eat this

kind of food every day. I eat in moderation and this way I don't feel deprived. Those feelings can make you eat much more than you really want or need.

Controlling portions is important, too, and so is drinking enough water. I do not get on the scale every day, but only once a week in the morning.

So, I will continue with my small goals. Just think about this: If you lose just one pound a week, one day, before you know it, you'll reach your goal. Pick up a pound of butter and you'll realize just how much weight that really is. Losing even the smallest amount will make you feel good.

I believe goals can be met. So, don't give up until you reach yours.

I'll be doing the same.
