ORANGE -- The coded radio transmissions among Orange police officers that fatal June morning were brief and brusque, with little emotion to betray the harrowing and tragic scene they saw on the Boston Post Road.

The officers who responded to the deadly crash that killed two Orange teens and injured a Milford police officer advised each other and headquarters by radio that there was a death on scene and possibly another pending, using the code for deceased pers on: "Signal 7."

A series of recordings over about 18 minutes from the early morning hours of June 13 were released Thursday to the Connecticut Post by the Orange Police Department in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the newspaper.

33 and 2 to step it up," said the first officer on scene, Ryan DePolo, referring to a paramedic unit and ambulance, at 2:15 a.m. "Got a, uh, (garbled)."

Documents on the crash provided by Orange police a day earlier indicate that DePolo happened upon the crash carnage at the Boston Post and Dogwood roads shortly after it occurred.

Nearly four minutes later, Officer Jeffrey Platek broadcast: "Be advised, we have a third patient, possibly Signal 7."

Seven minutes after that, he said, "... To give you an update, we do have one Signal 7 confirmed."

Pronounced dead at the scene was David Servin, 19, of Sheldon Court, the driver of the Mazda that was turning left from the eastbound lanes of Boston Post Road into Dogwood

when it was broad-sided by the police cruiser driven by Milford Officer Jason Anderson, returning to Milford via the Post Road from a mutual-aid call in West Haven.

Servin's girlfriend and passenger, Ashlie Krakowski, also 19, of Fernbrook Road, was thrown from the Mazda and died a short time later in the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven.

Krakowski and Servin are buried next to each other in Orange Center Cemetery, their graves marked with stuffed animals and flowers.

Milford police released their audio recordings from the crash scene Tuesday morning, including the conversation between Officer Rick Pisani, who had been following Anderson back to Milford, and the department's dispatchers and supervisors.

Trooper Joseph Russo, head of the State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit, said he expects to complete his investigation into the crash in about a month. Russo said his report will name the responsible party and the laws broken.

In the affidavit for a search-and-seizure warrant, state police say they are investigating a charge of criminally negligent homicide against Anderson.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Anderson was traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred, and that both Milford officers may have been speeding.

Anderson has returned to administrative duty, but does not have medical clearance to resume patrols, Milford Chief Keith Mello said.
