BRIDGEPORT — A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a machine shop in the city's East End early Saturday.

The fire broke out in Alfa Tec Manufacturing Inc., a wooden building at 230 Fifth St., at 2:45 a.m., said Assistant Fire Chief John Currivan.

"Everything's a total loss," Currivan said.

Neighbors behind the 100 foot-by-100 foot building called 911, Currivan said.

"We had heavy fire," he said. "The fire spread so fast."

Alfred Hoff, one of the owners, had closed the shop at 6 p.m. last Friday , according to Currivan.

The United Illuminating co. cut power to the business and surrounding structures, the assistant chief said.

Firefighters also worked to save neighboring houses from catching fire.

Fire Inspector Charles Dimbo of the Fire Marshal Division is investigating, Currivan said.
